5 Reasons Why Regular Grooming Is Important for Your Dog’s Health?

Dogs are known as man’s best friend for many reasons, such as for their loyalty, companionship, and unconditional love. As dog owners or devotees, it is our responsibility to take care of their physical and mental health. One of the most important aspects of caring for your dog is grooming. Regular grooming is essential for maintaining your dog's overall health, as it not only keeps them looking and smelling good but also helps prevent various health issues and maintains their hygiene.

Here are some reasons why regular grooming is important for your dog’s health:

  1.  Promotes Healthy Skin and Coat

Regular grooming is crucial for the health of your dog's skin and coat. Brushing helps to remove loose fur and dirt, which can prevent mats and tangles. Mats and tangles can lead to skin irritation, inflammation, and even skin infections. Moreover, brushing distributes the natural oils in your dog's skin, which keeps their coats shiny, healthy, and free from dryness or dandruff. When it comes to brushing, there are various techniques used by groomers. Today we will demonstrate line and back brushing.

  1.  Prevention of Health Issues

Dogs can easily get infected by ticks, fleas, and other parasites, which can cause a variety of health issues ranging from mild to more severe problems. Regular grooming assists in detecting any potential signs of these parasites and removing them before they can cause any harm. Grooming also allows you to detect any lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities on your dog's skin, which could be indicative of more serious health problems. If you notice anything unusual, take them to a vet for an early diagnosis and a treatment plan before it becomes significant. The following also plays a vital role when it comes to looking after a dog’s health:

  • Nail trimming- Nail trimming is probably one of the most overlooked parts of general dog care. Long and unattended nails can weaken the entire tendon and bone structure of the foot and pastern and can cause discomfort when walking. Long nails can break off exposing the soft underlying flesh and “quick” which can cause intense pain and sensitivity. Dogs can injure themselves when scratching or can scratch and injure their owners, especially children. The nail can get so long that it could start growing back into the dog’s paw pad, which will not only cause pain but could lead to infection, especially of the dewclaw, which is often overlooked. Long nails can get caught on an object or fabric and be torn off which is extremely painful and might need medical attention.
  • Paw pad care- Dogs only have sweat glands on their paw pads and noses and use these tools to cool themselves down. If the hair between the paw pads is too long it might restrict the dog from cooling himself down. Ticks also love to hide in between the paw pads, causing them to go unnoticed by the dog’s owner which could lead to a variety of health issues. Unshaven paw pads make noticing cracked or injured paw pads more difficult. Shaving the paw pads only needs to be applied to some breeds such as Poodles, Bouviers des Flandres, Border Collies, Yorkies and so on.
  • Shaving the anus- Pseudocoprostasis is a condition that arises when faecal matter becomes matted in the hair surrounding the dog or any other animal’s anal opening. Complete obstruction of the anus can occur. (Veterinarians, 2015). This leads to difficulty defecating and could be painful. The faeces are in constant contact with the skin which could result in infections. Breeds with long hair around their anuses need to have it shaved or trimmed short to avoid Pseudocoprostasis and reduce anal odour and stains on the hair around the anus. Keeping the hind section groomed, will improve the dog’s overall cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Ear care- Dogs need their ears cleaned regularly, especially those prone to ear infections. Some breeds have hair in their ear canals that need to be plucked to allow airflow into the ear which would reduce ear infections from happening. Although this is more commonly found in long-coated and wavy-coated dogs than others. Removing the hair on the outside of the ear of some breeds will reduce the collection of dirt and reduce mats from forming. Shaving the inside and outside of the ears makes them lighter, allowing more air circulation inside the ears which will result in fewer ear infections because the air reduces the moisture inside the ears.
  1.  Improves Their Overall Hygiene

Dogs can be messy creatures, and they often get themselves into situations that require a good cleaning afterwards. Grooming helps to keep your dog clean, smelling fresh and free from bacteria and parasites. Regular grooming helps to remove dirt, debris, and odours that can build up over time. Bathing helps to remove dirt and grime from their skin and coat, and it also helps to get rid of fleas and ticks, which can cause severe health issues if left unchecked.

  1.  Strengthens Your Bond with Your Dog

Grooming is a great way to bond with your dog, as it allows you to spend time with him and show how much you care. By grooming your dog regularly, you can establish a routine and build a strong relationship. Grooming can also be a relaxing and enjoyable experience for your pet, which can help to reduce his stress and anxiety.

  1.  Improves Mental Health

Regular grooming sessions can have a positive effect on your dog's mental health. It provides them with much-needed attention and affection, which can reduce their stress and anxiety levels. Taking dogs to the groomers also improves a dog’s socialization ability, as they get to interact with other people and other dogs. Sending a dog to the groomers from an early age will reduce the possibility of a dog developing separation anxiety as he will be comfortable with other people.

Conclusion

In conclusion, regular grooming is crucial for maintaining your dog's health and well-being. Not only does it keep them looking good, but it also prevents health issues, promotes cleanliness, and improves their mental health. It is recommended to groom (whether it is just brushing) your dog at least once a week or more often, depending on the breed and the length of his coat. Grooming should be done gently, with patience and attention, to ensure that your furry friend enjoys the experience. Remember, a healthy dog is a happy dog, and grooming is an essential part of keeping them vigorous and strong.
